Video Surprise

So, a while ago I did a vlog about why I chose Islam as my faith -- I'd had many of my old high school pals asking me, and a couple of my followers too, so, I thought I'd do a little video. (don't worry, I'll put it in this post!)

So a few days after putting it up, my daughter came up to me and said "Mom, have you ever adopted a baby?" -- and I knew that she'd watched this.  It's not all that big of a deal -- except -- I hadn't yet told my kids about the baby that I'd given up for adoption.  It's not as if it were a secret or anything, it's just -- I wanted to wait until they were old enough to really "get" it...you know?  I had this irrational fear that they'd be like "what if mom gives us away too?"

Turns out that this fear was totally unfounded...they are ecstatic that they have a sister out there -- they want to see her, see pictures, write letters -- which is all cool with the parents who adopted her (and cool with me too)...

This made my heart SO happy to read your post this morning! Your daughter is FAR wiser and kind than I was ... I remember having NO idea what to say to you back in high school (so I think I went the every so rude and shameful route of not saying anything at all!).

Asalaamu alaikum

This is very touching. We have a lot in common. And can I say I love, love your hijab? Where did you get it from? Did you jazz it up or does it come like that? You are very brave to youtube yourself. Don't think I'd have the guts! Hey don't feel old..I've been muslim for 18 yrs! Sorry my thoughts are all over the place. Wish we could meet in real life to have a proper discussion.

C -- thanks so much for the kind words! I'd love to meet you in person too, not just over the phone...

Anyhow -- the hijab (it's actually a Hoojab) and I got it from my favourite place to spend money: Pearl Daisy

Amazing story masha'Allah. I didn't have my child up for adoption but I did have an abortion when I was younger, coming from an Asian background giving birth out of marriage would have been probably the end of my life - literally. It does prey on my mind all the time and I always seem to find someway to always turn back to that incident in my life, but you live and learn I suppose. Thank you so much for sharing heather, you are a really strong amazing person. Love you so much - your anonymous sister in Islam xxx

I am so glad you shared your own story, and allowed us the opportunity to see and hear you.

Thank you.

Hi Heather, I feel like an idiot for asking, but I've never known why and always wanted to know why Muslims wear Hijabs, what is the purpose and what do they mean. I really hope this doesn't sound rude, it's truly not meant to. I just want to learn and understand. :) Thanks for the video too, always wanted to know how you came to embrace the Muslim religion and felt like a douche for asking. Thanks for sharing! :)

Kristen -- I'm surprised you hold anything back! Not the Kristen that I know! lol -- Okay, *I believe* that God has asked us to cover ourselves (now, don't get me wrong here, men have to as well, they're not to show anything from navel to knee, amongst other things) -- That's not the topic here though.

What I realized though (after wearing Hijab) is that there are 2 components of it -- first, it is a PHYSICAL reminder to me to watch my speech, behavior and attitude...basically, it keeps me humble and pious. Second -- it is a physical reminder to OTHERS(usually, but not always men) who may forget that I do have a brain and not just breasts and long, flowing hair. In fact, when I first started wearing it (and really, until now) -- men are very, VERY polite with me -- holding open doors, talking to my face, and lowering their glances (like, to the floor, not my chest) -- something I never realized I was missing out on until I started receiving it. Sweet.

Assalamu Alaikum,

MashaAllah very nice video :) I always find conversion stories very interesting, and always admire those who go looking for the truth. Alhumdulillah I'm so glad my own mother went looking for the truth and that I had the opportunity to be a muslim practically my whole life. And I also LOVE your hijab :)

Please comment, please. It makes me feel good, and well -- a woman just likes to feel good every now and then. I may not agree with your comment, it may even tick me off and make me want to delete it...but comment anyway and make my day.
