An Anti-Rape Condom??

Okay, this is not a joke -- it's an actual, honest-to-God product that someone has made.  Here's the link to the story.  If you don't want to click, here's the gist.

The woman inserts the latex condom like a tampon. Jagged rows of teeth-like hooks line its inside and attach on a man's penis during penetration...[o]nce it lodges, only a doctor can remove it -- a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.
"It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it's on," she said. "If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn't break the skin, and there's no danger of fluid exposure."

Though I think that a little pain is only deserved by a man who rapes a woman, I see far too many flaws with this.

First, isn't rape usually an unexpected event??  I mean, are you supposed to say to your assailant, "Please wait one moment while I insert this penis stabbing female condom."  I don't think so.

Second - in order for this thing to work, you still have to be raped.  Sure, there's a minor bit of justice, but the deed is still done.

Third - when are you going to get that wicked, twisted woman who's mad at her boyfriend/husband for whatever reason and uses this as a way to "get back" at him.

The idea is interesting, her intentions are wonderful, but I'm not convinced that this is a great answer to a horrible problem.

It is a very interesting comment for sure, however like you said you would have to wear one pretty much 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I would be interesting to know how much this is going for and how readily it will be available.

@ Cheryl -- later on in the linked article, it says they retail at about $2 each.

I believe this was 1st intended for women in Africa to use where rape is a common every day occurance sadly :(
and that the idea of using it here came later...it is horrible to think you'd have to wear the thing pretty much all the time because who really knows when they are going to be raped ya know.

Forget the clasps. Can't we just invent something that will castrate them automatically? Like a stun gun or something.

For the situation in Africa, I think it's a good thing. Typically, these women are so subserviant they wouldn't think twice about using it as a means of revenge. 1 in every 1000 women in South Africa is raped. 75% of those are gang rape... That is appauling. If this can help protect them - I'm all for it.
However, if this were brought to other, more "progressive" countries, where women are NOT subserviant to men - I can see true and ugly repercussions. Although it certainly would be just desserts for a cheatin' man (kidding, kidding, maybe...)

Another thought -- what about gang rape? What about sodomy? At what age do you begin to get your daughters to insert this so that they are "safe"?

It seems so sad to me to live in at atmosphere of expected violence. You are what you think; expect to be a victim and you will be.

My concern is when he feels the pain, he may do worse things...I worry that a woman may not come out alive

as a gang rape victim..i would've been shot had i worn that. there were 3 guys and a small handgun in the room so it sounds horrible but in MY situation, it wouldn't have been a good thing.

ker-AND-uh, I'm so sorry that happened to you. That's awful.

I think there are many who have concerns over this condom, as per what you pointed out here Hethr.

Please comment, please. It makes me feel good, and well -- a woman just likes to feel good every now and then. I may not agree with your comment, it may even tick me off and make me want to delete it...but comment anyway and make my day.
